Use primer and paint for light body rust, bed liner to repair undercoating wear (yes, the pickup-bed stuff), and a rust neutralizer on frame and subframe rust. Just a little extra vigilance reduces rust to no more of a problem than any other regular maintenance issue.

Apply Rust Doctor to the rusty metal. Be sure surface is dry. Apply Rust Doctor with brush or spray system. Apply enough Rust Doctor to cover the rust completely. Do not allow any rust to show through the surface. If necessary, apply a second coat of Rust Doctor while the first coat is still tacky or after 24 hours (Illustration 3).
How to prevent rust. Exposure to outdoor conditions will increase the risk of rust, especially if the climate is rainy or humid. These are the best ways of preventing rust: Rust resistant alloys. The most popular rust resistant alloys are stainless steel and weathering steel. Stainless steel contains a minimum of 11% chromium.
